A Personal Journey to Building a Better Healthcare Solution
When Bo Holland’s son, Ford, came home from his freshman year at Davidson College, Bo had no idea how much their lives were about to change. What started as a simple headache soon escalated into blurred vision, emergency room visits, and, ultimately, a diagnosis that would shake any family—a rare pineal brain tumor.
The next several months were the hardest of their lives. Endless doctor visits, hospital stays, rounds of chemo, and radiation became their new normal. The incredible doctors and staff at Dell Children’s and MD Anderson worked tirelessly to treat Ford, and, through their expertise and care—Ford is now 10 years cancer-free.
But during this difficult journey, Bo encountered two unexpected and frustrating challenges:
Disconnected Care: None of Ford’s doctors had a complete picture of his medical history, making it harder to provide the best possible treatment.
Lack of Personalized Guidance: Bo and his family didn’t have the medical knowledge to ask the right questions or fully understand the implications of the decisions they were asked to make.
It was 2013—eighteen years after the internet revolution—and yet, Bo found himself hand-carrying faxes and burning CDs just to share Ford’s medical records between doctors and hospitals. Despite a national push for electronic health records, the system was failing them when they needed it most.
At night, Bo turned to Google and WebMD, but those platforms only offered general information. They didn’t provide the personalized guidance the family needed—something that could take into account Ford’s unique medical conditions, treatments, and circumstances.
After years of dealing with a fragmented healthcare system, Bo made a decision: he was going to do something about it. Drawing on his background in digital banking systems, where innovation had driven seamless, secure, and personalized experiences, he set out to build a new kind of solution.
That’s how the world’s first Digital Health Bank was born.
Bo’s vision was to create a platform where patients could securely access and store their entire medical history in one place. More importantly, it would offer personalized health guidance, tailored to each individual’s unique medical profile—so no one would have to go through what his family did, armed with only scattered information and outdated technology.
Today, that vision is a reality. Bo’s experience as a father facing the unimaginable has fueled his passion for building a healthcare solution that empowers patients and families to take control of their health, and finally makes navigating the healthcare system simpler, smarter, and more connected.
